Great Kitchen Secrets Book Review

As followers of this blog know, I love to cook, but like any amateur cook, there’s a lot that I don’t know about making good food. Like many of you, I’ve had to throw food out because it spoiled too quickly or because I added too much salt to a dish. Many a time I’ve had to order pizza at the last minute because I had guests coming and yet another new recipe had failed. Sure, I often spend time looking for cooking tips online, but frankly, there is a LOT of bad information out there. It’s hard to know who to trust. Besides, if I’m in the kitchen and have an emergency, I’m not happy about having to...

Aero Knife Review

Cooking is one of my hobbies, but there are times when I get really frustrated in the kitchen. I’ve got some carpal tunnel from working with computers, and super-heavy knives really strain my hands. Plus, if I’m preparing sticky foods, like cheese, I’m constantly struggling with pushing food off the knife blade as I cut. Yes, I tried lighter, cheaper knives, but their blades always dulled quickly and they didn’t have the strength to cut through tougher foods. Sure, there are some lightweight Japanese knives on the market, but one little knife can cost $50 or more. I just don’t have that kind of cash. I didn’t see any way around this problem until my mom called me one...

Thermal-Aid Zoo Animals Review

While I’m not a nurse, sometimes I feel like I am when dealing with my kids. They are pretty healthy, but they do get colds and the flu, as well as bumps and bruises from playing outside like most kids do. Normally I’ve used heating pads or cold packs for the kids, depending on what their condition is, but these options can be frustrating. Heating pads require the user to be near an outlet, and traditional ice packs can leak and don’t seem to stay cold for very long. Plus, none of these options are particularly kid-friendly or eco-friendly as they contain strange gels and chemicals. Then my mother-in-law told me about Thermal-Aid, stuffed animals that double as hot/cold...

Perfect Polly Pet Review

My kids love animals, but with a cat and a dog, we just don’t have the room, energy or money for additional animals. Still, the kids kept asking for a parakeet, and they almost wore me down. But after visiting with some friends and meeting their parakeet, I realized that there was no way that my kids were going to assume that much responsibility. They just aren’t ready to be constantly cleaning cages, refilling water bottles and making sure the bird has enough food. I told the kids to forget about getting a parakeet. But then, one weekend, they visited their grandmother. She had a new “pet” called Perfect Polly that was a very lifelike parakeet replica that moves...

Light Angel – Review of the Motion Sensor LED

There are few things more annoying (or sometimes even frightening) than getting home at night and struggling to find your house keys because you don’t have enough light to see them. Sure, you can leave your porch light on (if you remember), but that wastes electricity and you end up going through lightbulbs like crazy.  I’d thought about getting those motion sensor lights, but they were really expensive and would require a lot of time to get them installed. Then I was watching TV one day and saw an infomercial for Light Angel. It’s a motion sensor LED light that you simply stick to your walls using adhesive strips. It looked like a really cool product so I ordered...

Pop Chef Review

So I love to cook, but don’t really have a lot of time to do it. This means that it can be hard to prepare healthy snacks for my kids, so I end up buying a lot of really expensive “natural” treats at health food stores. It also means that if I need to bring appetizers or treats to parties or school events, I either need to buy them from a bakery or deli, or spend a lot of time slicing and arranging foods so they look great on party planners. One day, after spending a lot of money on a party tray from the local caterer, I got online and saw an ad for the Pop Chef. Here...

Flips Audio Headphones Review

As both a musician and a music lover, I’m always listening to music, even when I’m on the go. While I love being able to listen to songs on my phone, sometimes there’s situations where I want to share music with others and normally the only way to do that is if I have somewhere to hook my phone up (like in the car or if someone has a portable speaker system for iPhones). Since it would be a pain for me to carry a big speaker system around with me, generally I just have to hope someone else has an iPhone speaker hookup at their place if I want to play my songs. Then one day I was...
